Reading has been offering the Community Health Worker Training Institute since January 2014. Classes meet at Langan Allied Health Academy in the Penn State Health-St. Joseph downtown Reading Campus. Funding for the training is provided by St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation.

The Community Health Worker Training Institute has a 100 hour curriculum. The class meets twice each week for 4 hours for 12 weeks.

Class Description


The Community Health Worker Training Institute will provide participants with resources and information that will equip them to more effectively connect the community with health care, government and social service systems, focusing specifically on local services.

In this training, there will be presentation and discussion about the Role and Responsibilities of Community Health Workers, Personal and Population Safety, Networking and Teamwork, Reporting and Evaluation, HIPPA, Ethics and Confidentiality, Primary and Preventative Care, Chronic Diseases, Health Literacy, COMPASS, Boundaries, Benefits Check up, and Self Care and Stress. Class participants will have the opportunity to engage in special training, such as CPR/AED/First Aid, COMPASS training, Youth Mental First Aid, and Tobacco Cessation.
